Friend Request

I got this strange message on my Facebook account last night. Do you think I should friend him?

BTW's, Woman's Day is a brand that caters to 45+, conservative, overweight grandmothers. I just so happen to work for the same publisher.

El Prado Getting all Virtual in Google Earth

So, it is apparently now possible to visit the Prado without having to undertake the tedium of foreign travel. Or, indeed, of even having to leave your house. Or get dressed. It's not like you ever wanted to go to Spain anyway, right?

Kidding aside, I'm pretty psyched on this. All you need is Google Earth and you can view gorgeous, high resolution digital images of most (all? I don't even know (the answer is 14)) of the paintings in the Prado's collection. I'm talking like 17 GIGApixels of resolution! That's so high I don't even remember what giga means*! The video may be a little boring, unless you're into like workflow porn or digital retouching porn or old crackled paint porn, but it's pretty cool to see them going through the whole process.

*That is a lie. Of course I remember what giga means. I am, after all, a professional.

Cultural Delights

With all the hype around Animal Collectives new CD, I wanted to share this little interview with Panda Bear done by some friends I made while in Argentina. Juan, the editor of this online magazine started in print with a magazine called Sede which was really beautiful, based on the zine concept. Its delicate design, writing, and art all created this feeling that I can only describe as quintessentially Argentine. With all the expenses of print he is experimenting with an online format- named Molde-which is equally as beautiful. Though generally a difficult transition to make he did it flawlessly and I think his online mag is a huge success.

It’s in Spanish, but at least you can enjoy the pictures!

Kidnapped by K Mart

That reminds me… on Saturday I watched this amazing movie from the 80’s called Ruthless People. It was a serious fave when I was 8, and so I was concerned maybe it wouldn’t pass the test of time. Oh, it got an A f-ing plus. Bette Midler, Danny Devito, Judge Reinhold… A spandex mini skirt tycoon, ransoms, murders, sex tapes… oh the list goes on. Sorry no imbedded video available....

I Fell in Love with a Baked Potato

D, your awesome trailer for Old Joy reminds me of a supremely excellent film I have subjected you to (against your will) Bongwater. Straight outta the 90's, all of today's has been actors get weird in the Northwest. Everyone from Andy Dick to Alicia Witt, Jeremy Sisto (Elton from Clueless) and Jamie Kennedy spark it up in this truly bizarre stoner flick. In the scene above, former hottie Luke Wilson and Brittany Murphey take a hike in the woods to meet up with weed farmer/court jester Jack Black. They all take acid and the original Brit Brit goes bananas. What a weirdo! I highly recommend Netflixing this to cure the winter bores.

SPOILER ALERT Aliens abduct everyone at the end.

Cold, Cold, Cold

It's so cold out, I'm
boycotting life. Check out this
blog, it's really nice.

Movie Time

If you need to escape from the winter as much as I do, I recomened this really beautiful film called Old Joy. It’s full of slow moving but lush shots of Portland and gives a brief portrait into the intricacies of a long-standing friendship. I fall asleep really easily during movies, but it’s only an hour long!! And if you can’t handle that, just watch this nice trailer. It’s like a little road trip form your couch/desk. Also Will Oldham aka Bonnie “Prince” Billy is in it and the score is by Yo La Tengo

They have to be at least 21 and they will be going on a date paid for by the show. There will also be a nice give away I've been told and we need them to be able to do it all day on Wed. If you have anyone in mind send them my way and let them know they will have to call me today and we can make it happen. They have to be cute and they have to be at least 21 and single. Open up the black books and dig deep into those phone books so we can get these single ladies some V-day action compliments of Tyra. give them my work number 646-638-5614 oh and if any of you want to do it let me know and I will tell the producer because are also finding single guys.

THIS MAY POSSIBLY BE THE BEST MAP EVER

This map from a recent New York Times Article depicts the locations of only a small sampling (!!!) of all the towns and villages in the UK with "rude" place names. Well, they call them rude. I call them hee-larious. Although, as my friend pointed out, the detail level on the map was not high enough for Slutshole Lane in Norfolk to be included. And that, my friends, may be one of the biggest tragedies of 2009.

(Note how London has a black dot, as if to indicate the seriousness of its name. Black? Not funny. Orange? Funny. Red? Oh forget it that's amazing.)

The Bronx..!

Here we come...

Gem o' the Day

Having already expressed love for Unearthen i'm equally smitten by the jewlery from the ladies over at Lady Grey . They have been casting lovely raw looking pieces inspired by the natural world and science. Rumor has it their next collection may include some man made geodes. Oh, and the girls behind the line went to Mass ART... who doesn't love a Boston girl....I’m sold.

Hi I Am New

Sometimes I get so excited about science I freak out a little bit. That is very true. Sort of like how this dude feels about bismuth.

Wise Words Gossip Girl

My thing about going to the gym is that I leave my bracelets on, and I put on my makeup the way I would do it in real life, and I wear cute clothes, because if I don't feel good when I leave the house, then I'm not motivated to do it. I need to like how I look while I'm doing it.

Taylor Momson aka Jenni Humphreys

As dumb as this sounds, I agree with Taylor/Jenni about liking what you wear when you work out. I just found this adorable athletic attire* website Hari and I want all of these outfits as I'm doing my jazz pilates DVD by my favorite new fitness personality (and Gwyneth's) Tracy "Jazz Arm" Anderson.

*I get cold sweats just writing that

White House Smudge

A group of Native Americans, a Rabbi, and others gathering on Monday evening at 6 p.m to do a smudging ceremony in Washington to cleanse the White House, in preparation for the new energy to move in. Since they can't smudge the White House in person, they have picked a different location and will use the power of their intentions to direct the ceremony.

You can participate by sending all of your good energy, best intentions and love to the Obama's in the new White House. Or, rub your crystals and smile.

A Classic and Favorite

Having forever and always been a fan of Petit Bateau tees (maybe it’s my partiality towards sail boats) I was thrilled to hear this news. Makers of some of the softest cotton tees ever, are finally branching out a little from their baby clothes roots. Their brand evokes the simplicity of French style, but their cuts were getting a bit stale. Check out these pics of their forthcoming collection.

Sixy, huh?

This is my little collection!

Crystals and mysticism are in, in a big way- the crystal stilts, crystal castles (ok, I know sooo last summer), the super hip jewelry line unearthen . You may think, “Yeah crystals, another stupid irony filled hipster trend” but I beg to differ. With all of the turmoil around us it is no wonder so many people are turning to spiritual healing and mystical wonders to bring our empty lives meaning and hope. I just started a crystal collection and yes, it may have begun out of a desire for pretty sparkly things, but it has blossomed into a quest for self fulfillment. Accordingly, I am starting a little column here on Today//Today which will explore the healing properties of many common gems and crystals. No longer just for moms in Tucson and hippies my friends...

Amethyst :
Traditionally worn to guard against drunkenness and to instill a sober mind (don’t let this deter you) The word amethyst comes from the Greek meaning "without drunkenness" and amethyst is believed to protect one from poison.
· It is used as a dream stone and to help insomnia. Put an amethyst under your pillow to bring about pleasant dreams, or rub it across your forehead to offer relief from a headache.
· Ancient Egyptians used the amethyst to guard against guilty and fearful feelings. It has been worn as protection from self-deception, as well as a protection against witchcraft.
· The amethyst symbolizes piety, humility, sincerity and spiritual wisdom. It is thought the amethyst is the perfect stone to symbolize The Age of Aquarius.
Healing properties of Amethyst
Amethyst is a gemstone often worn by healers, as it has the power to focus energy.
Amethyst is used for problems in the blood and in breathing problems. Amethyst crystal clusters are used to keep the air and life force in the home clean and positive.
Using an Amethyst as a meditation focus will increase the positive spiritual feelings. Amethyst helps overcome fears and cravings. It also
helps relieve headaches.

Saddest News EVER

Oh how i'll miss those lil cups

Ok. Maybe not the saddest, but pretty sad.

PANYA the best little coffee shop and japanese pastry place is closing!!! I'm shedding tears as we speak. Me and my BF would meet here between class when we first started dating. Back in the day ( like in college- remember that?) we used to sit on the sidewalk outside here and drink coffee. The little tea sandys were the greatest... and i never got the pastries but i always wanted to try the green tea tiramisu.

I'm going to get one before they close. You should too! Its the end of an era....

Art Show

- these pieces are from previous shows....

On Saturday I went to my friend Aaron King’s opening at Guild & Greyshkul Gallery in Soho. He makes really amazing sculptures that look like mint chip ice cream and intestines made from bubble gum. I can’t really venture to say what this all means on a grand scale but I can say that I liked it and think he’s a great artist. The other artist in the show, Trenton Duerkson, was also terrific.

Go and check it out!

Here’s a more thoroughly educated review:

“What we produce is directly linked to our sense of place and purpose in the world. This holds true for an individual, community, nation and species. The principle remains the same but the scale changes, and as a result the issues that arise unfold from one onto the others. As of 2008 America is in a crisis. There are many facets to our crisis but one that trickles down is the steady decrease of production within our country. We have surrounded ourselves with things we didn’t make and even worse we don’t know who did. The psychological effect from this physical alienation is perhaps causing the nation’s identity to evaporate.

The objects in this show reflect these conditions in different ways. In Aaron King’s work, piles, multiples, or modular structures are used to imply an accumulation. If something is piling up it is inherently tied to a larger indefinite number and the viewer, recognizing it as part of a larger whole, can develop a narrative around it. To further the confusion, he takes recognizable things and changes their properties through materials and the manner in which they are handled. For instance, ice cream made out of concrete is permanently stable and can be likened to a palette of bricks. Central to Trenton Duerksen’s work is the moment or potentiality of the pop, the collapse of the stored or accumulated energy contained in the sculpture, either frozen or illustrated by way of its construction and materials. There lies in each of his pieces a necessary agitation, the disconcerting energy that belies a pleasing surface or crafted aspect. Both artists make a strong case for what an object can gain by the presence of the hand. In doing so they emphasize their individualized standards of production.” – taken from the
