Queue It: Ferris Bueller

Speaking of favorite childhood movies, the house Cameron lived in from Ferris Bueller's Day Off is for sale. I think it's pretty awesome and it has definitely stuck with me since I was a kid. I didn't realize it until I moved into a glass box in the woods* late last year.

Check out some pictures, it's like way classic:
[Cameron doesn't want to go out, but Ferris keeps calling]
He'll keep calling me, he'll keep calling me until I come over. He'll make me feel guilty. This is uh... This is ridiculous, ok I'll go, I'll go, I'll go, I'll go, I'll go. What - I'LL GO. Shit.

Ferris: If you're not over here in fifteen minutes, you can find a new best friend.
Cameron: You've been saying that since the fifth grade.

Ferris: Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

Other LOLs

You wear too much eye makeup. My sister wears too much. People think she's a whore.

This is my ninth sick day this semester. It's getting pretty tough coming up with new illnesses. If I go for ten, I'm probably gonna have to barf up a lung. So, I better make this one count.

A person should not believe in an "-ism," he should believe in himself. I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me."

*No I don't, silly

Holi

I just happened upon these photos of the Holi festival in India and it looks so fun. They take celebrating spring to a whole new level, making painting eggs look like child’s play. Those colors look delicious. I want to go to there.

from Wikiepedia:
Holi,ھولی also called the Festival of Colours, is a popular Hindu spring festival. Holi has certain perennial rituals attached to it, the first is the smearing of coloured powder on each other, and throwing water, coloured and scented using pichkaris, shaped like giant syringes or squirt guns.
Holi is a festival of radiance (Teja) in the universe. During this festival, different waves of radiance traverse the universe, thereby creating various colours that nourish and complement the function of respective elements in the atmosphere.

Clueless

Clueless is one of my favorite movies in the world. I think it says a lot about me.

Cher: Okay, so you're probably going, "Is this like a Noxzema commercial or what?" But seriously, I actually have a way normal life for a teenage girl.

Amber: She could be a farmer in those clothes.

Cher: This is Alaia, that's like a totally important designer.

Amber: Was I the only one listening?I thought it reeked.
Cher: No I believe that's your designer imposter perfume.

WAH Magazine looked back at the sick and sweet fashion from the movie and I stole all of their pics. Word is, there might be a sequel. I imagine that would be more like the new 90210, but I'm open minded.
Space Symmetry Structure is a blog written by Daniel Piker. There's something here for everyone, I think. Art kids can get down with the pictures, math nerds can geek out about the topology of rigidly foldable corrugations, and physics heads can get down with his gnarly magnetic field videos. Seriously, it is a pretty cool blog.

Get acquainted with these tessellations. Ooh.

And hey, here is some really complicated folding.

" This has links to some surprisingly deep mathematics – in particular the subjects of discrete differential geometry and integrable structure – Which have important architectural applications (such as finding planar panelings of curved surfaces) and also tie in with my earlier interest in minimal surfaces and circle packings. If Spam Headlines Were Literal

Elliott Burford is apparently a designer and art director...Or something. Technically, I believe I should have said "Elliott Burford is apparently an art director and art designer" because of the way he placed the slash in his own description on his website.

Whatever. The point is he's got 24 funny pictures that are his renderings of what it might look like if the headlines of spam emails were actually meant to be taken literally. It's funny. Go look.

Taco Time

If you asked a ten year old me what my favorite food was I would have immediately replied Tacos. I still hold firm with this answer, however my idea of a taco has changed immensely over the years. Being Canadian, and raised anywhere but Mexico, I am not an authentic authority. The affair began with a love of Old El Paso seasoning and ground beef but has developed along with the popularity of Mexican street food here in NYC. My friends from LA will probably think I have no right to talk about tacos…. Blah, blah, blah. I just want to share my obsession with you! Please join me in my quest to understand the taco! I have in no way been to every taco place in NY so please share with me what I am missing out on. I will be making June my own personal taco month… you can expect haiku’s and photos and weight gain. Do you think I can do 30 days of tacos???

The Real Me

I love tea parties. I have this dream that one day I will have all these lady friends who will just pop by for tea in the afternoon, and I will always have little tea cookies and tea sandys on hand. When I was younger I had my birthday party at a tea room where you put on fancy costumes and sat around pretending to have high tea. Three years in a row. So imagine my delight when my friend forwarded me this blog about food which featured tea time! If you want to hang out with me, from now on I only accept invitations for tea. Ooooh…. I just had the best idea, I think we all need calling cards!

Putting on the Ritz Egg Salad Tea Sandwiches
8 hard-cooked
eggs*

1/2 cup mayonnaise

Salt and pepper to taste

1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh dill

6 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature

20 slices best-quality white bread**
** * Choose the best-quality white or wheat bread as possible. Never serve end slices. Freezing the bread before cutting and then spreading makes for easier handling.
Peel eggs and place into a medium bowl. Slice eggs and then coarsely mash them with the back of a fork. Add mayonnaise, salt, pepper, and dill; stir until well blended. NOTE: This mixture can be refrigerated, covered, up to two days.
Spread butter onto one side of each slice of bread. Spread the buttered side of 10 slices of bread with 2 tablespoons egg mixture. Top with remaining slices of bread, buttered side down.
Carefully cut the crusts from sandwich with a long, sharp knife. Cut in half diagonally, then cut in half again. If desired, decorative shapes can be made with cookie cutters.
Yields 10 whole sandwiches or 20 halves or 40 fourths.

Cucumber Mint Tea Sandwich
1/2 seedless cucumber, peeled and very thinly sliced (about 32 slices)

1/4 cup loosely packed fresh mint leaves, rinsed, spun dry, and chopped fine

1/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature

1/4 cup cream cheese, room temperature

16 slices best-quality white bread

*Salt to taste
* Choose the best-quality white or wheat bread as possible. Never serve end slices. Freezing the bread before cutting and then spreading makes for easier handling.
Place cucumber slices between layers of paper towels to remove excess moisture.
In a small bowl, combine mint, butter, and cream cheese; spread on one side of each slice of bread. Lay cucumber slices onto the buttered side of 8 slices of bread. Sprinkle with salt. Top with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side down.
Carefully cut the crusts from each sandwich with a long, sharp knife. Cut the sandwiches in half diagonally and then cut in half again. Decorative shapes can be made with cookie cutters.
Yields 8 whole sandwiches or 16 halves or 32 fourths.

The Universe

The Daily Beast alerted me yet again to the beauty of the universe. These images were taken by the soon-to-be decommissioned Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope. I think the images are epicly beautiful and speak for themselves. Wow.

Housing Crisis

These are two amazing photos of home design inspiration from constantly amazing website The Selby. Check out the mystical crystal mantel and the gorgeous plants in the balcony forest from Jonathan and Annie Zawada, Sydney based art directors. The rest of their place is rad, but for me, these two parts are pretty fantastic. Also while checking out The Selby, look at Natalie Wood's place... swoon swoon swoon... between The Selby, Sartorialist and Garance Dore, Australia is starting to call my name with it's creativity and natural beauty + the people don't look half bad... it's so colorful, unlike us.

Sandal Mania

I recently received a somehwat confusing email about this line of shoes that was starting up, but not yet available with a link to the website. The shoes, by a line called Marais, were very simple and chic and kind of what I think most girls are looking for these days. The amazing thing is the prices! They are under $100.00!?!?!? So then today I get an email that now the shoes are up and available for sale, and the website features little videos and snap shots of the designers and models playing in the park. It's all very cute.... just way too cute!

Also the tone of the descriptions seem really honest, like they're your old pal just telling you how it is "We strongly recommend breaking in your patent styles with socks or tights for the first couple of days...I wore my Mulberry Maryjanes with socks the first two times and I never got a blister any time after. As with any other suede shoes, avoid wearing them in the rain. "

Thanks Ladies, BFF!!

They're gonna do a pop up shop May 22nd. Be there or be looking for sandals all summer.....

Anita Pallenberg

Some days, I want to be Anita Pallenberg, long time paramour of Keith Richards, expert in the occult and black magic, 60's rock goddes and most stylish woman in the world who Kate Moss steals from constantly and with mad love. I mean, look at her hair! Her life was glamorous and grimy, live fast and only think about the moment. There was the requisite very nasty drug addiction, which I could do without of course. I love the way Anita lived and how she traveled in so much fur. Have you seen Performance? Anita + a young Mick Jagger in his most beautiful youth-that boy, always a looker. It's INSANE. You should see it. Take a peek and enjoy this rainy day dream with me.
